GLP-2 vs Tirzepatide: Why Tirz Has Different Names

In research-use-only (RUO) listings and peptide discussions, “GLP-2” often means tirzepatide, also called Tirz. The “2” can refer to its two receptor targets. Some people also use it to mean the next generation after semaglutide. GLP-2 is also the scientific name of a natural hormone—a chemical messenger made in the gut. That hormone and tirzepatide are different compounds.

There is a practical reason to understand the slang: a seller may put GLP-2 “T” in a product heading but tirzepatide in its certificate of analysis, or COA. A COA records test results for a sample. Knowing how those names connect helps you read the listing and its evidence together.

Why is tirzepatide called GLP-2?

WPA encounters two explanations for this informal name in the RUO market. They describe how people talk about the compound, rather than its scientific name.

Two receptor targets: GIP and GLP-1

Tirzepatide activates two receptors: GIP and GLP-1. A receptor is a protein that receives a signal. An agonist activates a receptor, so dual agonist means it acts at two targets. The “next generation after semaglutide” shorthand

In some RUO conversations, GLP-1 means semaglutide and GLP-2 means the next step, tirzepatide. That can sound like a version number. Semaglutide acts at the GLP-1 receptor; tirzepatide adds activity at the GIP receptor. But they are different compounds. This shorthand causes confusion because GLP-2 already has a scientific meaning: glucagon-like peptide-2, a natural gut hormone. A hormone is a chemical messenger made by the body. That GLP-2 is a separate peptide, not another name for tirzepatide. In a research paper or drug label, read the full name and receptor targets; the RUO nickname may mean something different. Is GLP-2 stronger than GLP-1? What the study found

If you mean tirzepatide versus semaglutide, a direct study gives a clearer answer than the nicknames. In SURMOUNT-5, estimated average weight loss after 72 weeks was 20.2% with tirzepatide and 13.7% with semaglutide. The trial enrolled 751 adults with obesity, or overweight and a weight-related condition, without diabetes. It compared the highest tolerated study doses: tirzepatide 10 or 15 mg and semaglutide 1.7 or 2.4 mg. (Published trial, trial design)

Tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss at those doses. That does not mean it is universally “stronger,” safer or better for every person. Digestive side effects were common in both groups. These results concern medicines used in a clinical trial; they do not establish the effects or quality of research-use-only products.

Why vendors and social media accounts use aliases

The nickname is not always just a simple way to describe two targets. In WPA’s experience with the RUO market, some vendors use aliases to make listings less visible to regulators or investigators, including the FDA. Affiliates and other social media users may use the same names hoping to reduce moderation, post removal or account restrictions.

That is WPA’s industry observation, not a verified explanation for every seller’s choice of name. It helps explain why the full compound name may disappear from a product heading while remaining in technical information such as the COA.

Platforms do restrict some commercial content: TikTok’s guidelines prohibit promotion and trade of regulated goods, subject to limited exceptions, and describe removing prohibited content. That policy context does not establish why any individual post was removed. (TikTok Community Guidelines)

An alias also does not make a product invisible. In an August 2026 warning letter to Peptide Partners, the FDA explicitly identified “GLP-2 T (Tirzepatide).” The agency connected the nickname to the compound. For readers, the useful takeaway is to follow the name into the supporting information. The heading alone may tell only part of the story.

How WPA checks a GLP-2 listing against its COA

WPA’s catalog review involves a person checking the vendor’s website and available COAs. The team uses the full compound name, chemical formula and other identifying details to determine what a listing represents. A chemical formula describes the atoms in a molecule; it is one clue to check alongside the rest of the information. That review lets WPA group differently named listings under the compound people are looking for.

When direct identifying information is absent, a match may instead rely on industry knowledge of an alias. That is an inferred match. It should be distinguished from a match supported by a COA or explicit website information. Reviewing those documents is also different from WPA conducting a laboratory test.

A real example: GLP-2 “T” on the page, tirzepatide in the COA

For this article, we read the seller-linked COA. We did not authenticate it with the testing laboratory or test the product ourselves. The COA supports the documented name match; it does not establish what is in every vial. The seller’s current COA details also differed from older details stored in WPA’s catalog, so the batch being offered still matters.

Use the catalog to find a listing, then check the details that can change:

  • Open the selected seller’s current COA. The full compound name can appear there even when the product heading uses an alias.
  • Check the offered batch. A batch, or lot, is a production group. A COA for an older batch may not describe the one currently offered.
  • Ask about a specific gap. For example: “Does the COA for batch MA-GLP2-102 cover the batch now offered?” If a listing has no clear identity information, ask for the full compound name and its COA.

The same naming distinction matters when choosing a calculator. What is the difference between GLP-1, GLP-2 and GLP-3 in RUO listings?

In this informal naming pattern, GLP-1 commonly points to semaglutide, GLP-2 to tirzepatide, and GLP-3 to retatrutide. An FDA warning letter records all three pairings. They are market labels, not a scientific numbering system. Semaglutide targets GLP-1; tirzepatide targets GIP and GLP-1; retatrutide targets GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon. GLP-1 is also a real hormone and a broader drug-class term, while scientific GLP-2 means the separate gut hormone. Context matters. Do GLP-2 T, GLP-2 TZ and Tirz mean the same thing?

In RUO listings and discussions, these names are used to refer to tirzepatide. “Tirz” is a shortened name; T and TZ are seller shorthand. The spelling is a clue to what the seller intends, not a test result. In the example above, the COA makes the connection explicit by naming tirzepatide. For another listing, look for the same kind of support rather than assuming every similar label has been verified.

Is GLP-2 stronger than GLP-1?

When those labels mean tirzepatide and semaglutide, tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss in SURMOUNT-5: 20.2% versus 13.7% after 72 weeks, at the doses studied. That result comes from a clinical comparison, not the number “2.” See the study’s population, doses and limits above. It does not validate a seller’s research-use-only product.

Does “dual agonist” mean tirzepatide is a blend?

No. Tirzepatide is one compound that acts at two receptor targets, GIP and GLP-1. “Dual” describes those two targets. It does not mean a mixture of two peptides, or a blend of GLP-1 and GLP-2. (Mounjaro prescribing information)

What does natural GLP-2 do, and is there a GLP-2 drug?

Natural GLP-2 helps regulate gut function, including intestinal blood flow and stomach-acid secretion. Teduglutide, sold as GATTEX, is a modified molecule based on GLP-2 that acts at GLP-2 receptors. It is different from tirzepatide. This is why a search for “GLP-2 drugs” can lead to information that does not apply to a seller’s GLP-2 T listing. (GATTEX prescribing information, section 12.1)

Can a high purity percentage prove a GLP-2 listing is tirzepatide?

No. Identity asks which compound was found; purity concerns other components in the tested sample. A high purity percentage alone does not answer the identity question. What this review establishes

The names and documents help identify what a listing represents. They do not turn a research-use-only product into an approved medicine.
